Well-Being Tip: Speaking Your Authentic Truth


Recently, I saw a pro-Trump post from a woman that is a close friend of the family. She is a nice woman, a kind woman, a woman that loves family- hers, mine, and others. I was genuinely surprised. And it stirred up a lot of emotions in me.

So, now I had a decision to make...how was I going to handle this?

There were many ways I could respond- so I asked myself- "What action could I take that would help me cultivate an experience of mental and emotional well-being?"

Option 1:
Go with my initial impulse and respond to her post with "WTF? What's wrong with you? How could you? Are you kidding me? But I realized THAT wrong making/shaming/arguing wasn't what would authentically make me feel better. Me making her wrong- me engaging in ego to ego- I'm right you're wrong- doesn't get me or anyone anywhere.
So- Option 1 is a no go.

Option 2:
Not say anything. Keep it to myself. Keep on scrolling by. Decide that saying something isn't going to change her mind. Save my energy. I almost did this one. Truly. This one almost won. EXCEPT- I'd made a commitment to myself to not stay silent around his racist behavior.
So- option 2 is also a no go

Option 3:
Share from a place of "This may not change your mind, but it gives me peace of mind that I shared it with you."
WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!
That's it- I needed to honor my commitment to speak up against racism and white supremacy- and speak up for why I don't want him in office AND do so in a way that isn't contributing to againstness and debate.

NOTE:
None of this was comfortable- or easy- or quick. HOWEVER now that I've done it, I feel at ease in myself. I'm not feeling all aggravated and frustrated for going off on her AND I'm not feeling guilty or ashamed that I didn't speak up.

I'm feeling good about having honored my own commitment to myself.
